Beginner Roadmap — First 10 Hours in Task Bar Hero
First-10-hours plan for TBH: Task Bar Hero — opener hero, free Priest, rune priorities, Cube basics, and common early mistakes.
Task Bar Hero looks like a toy stuck to your Windows taskbar. Under that tiny window is a full idle ARPG: auto-combat, a chest-driven loot economy, a permanent Rune Tree (~197 nodes in datamine-era guides), and the Hero-dric Cube with eight jobs. You almost never win by clicking harder in combat. You win by deciding where gold, gear, and attention go.
This page is the recommended first read on TBH Codex. After it, go to the Rune Tree and Cube guides.

The one rule that matters
Chests only drop while the game is running (minimised to the taskbar is fine). Closing the client is not “idling.”
| Mode | Gold / XP | Chests & gear pipeline |
|---|---|---|
| Game open (even minimised) | Yes | Yes — this is real progress |
| Client closed (offline runes) | Partial | Zero chests |
Chests feed equipment, Synthesis fodder, Alchemy gold, socket materials, and marketable loot. If you only leave the game closed overnight, you will feel permanently undergeared. Details: Idle vs Offline.
What the game actually is
- Developer / publisher: Nugem Studio (with Tesseract Studio). Free to play on Steam (released May 27, 2026).
- Combat: Your party auto-fights. You manage builds between fights.
- Party size: Up to 3 heroes. Slots come from the Rune of Command path — not from owning a class DLC.
- Classes: Knight / Ranger / Sorcerer (free starters), Priest (free DLC — claim it), Hunter / Slayer (paid DLC).
- Power systems: Skills + gear rarity ladder (Common → … → Cosmic) + Cube sockets + Rune Tree.
- Content shape: Multiple Acts and difficulty tiers; stages loop for farming; bosses often need Soul Stones (failed attempts usually do not consume them — confirm in your patch).
Hour 0 — install checklist
- Install from Steam (Windows 10/11 64-bit).
- Claim the free Priest DLC immediately (store page and/or Formation → Characters flow — UI labels shift by patch).
- First launch: let the window dock near the taskbar; leave it running while you work.
- Settings: turn on Auto-retry so failed stages keep looping without babysitting.
- Optional: note window reset hotkeys used by the community — Shift+F12 (position) / Shift+F11 (UI scale) — verify if your patch still maps them.
Hours 0–1 — first hero and first habits
Pick slot 1
| Opener | Best for | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Knight | Safest AFK; recommended default | Slightly slower early pack clear than Ranger |
| Ranger | Fast early clears, elite/boss tempo | Squishier if you AFK too early |
| Sorcerer | Later AoE farm value | Feels weaker day one without investment |
Default recommendation: Knight. You will add heroes soon; survivability teaches the game’s AFK nature.
First habits (do these every time you glance at the window)
- Open chests — they are your early gear/material faucet until automation runes exist.
- Equip obvious upgrades; stash materials and “maybe later” pieces.
- Spend skill points every level (red dots on portraits). Hoarding does nothing.
- If a stage is a brick wall, use the Portal to farm an earlier stage. The game is designed around that loop.
Pets note
Pet passives typically apply even when the pet is not “visually” the focus of the fight — equip bonuses; do not leave pet slots empty if you have pets.
Hours 1–3 — Runes + Cube unlock
| Unlock | Typical timing | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Rune Tree | ~Level 3 | Permanent account power; hero slots live here |
| Cube | Level 4 | Alchemy gold engine + Synthesis + later sockets |
Exact node names move with patches. The decision order does not: slots → automation → economy → combat stats. Full breakdown: Rune Tree priority.
Cube opens (often defaulting to Synthesis). For beginners, mentally re-label the default: your early job is usually Alchemy, not Synthesis. Full breakdown: Cube guide.
Hours 3–6 — buy party slots with Alchemy gold
The early gold pipeline
- Lock keepers before bulk actions (community tip: Alt + Left Click to lock — confirm in your client tooltips).
- Set Cube to Alchemy.
- Melt junk → gold + Cube XP.
- Spend gold on Rune of Command until you have 2, then 3 formation slots.
Community guides often call out the third slot as a painful spike (figures around ~150,000 gold appear in several writeups). Treat the number as patch-sensitive; treat the priority as mandatory.
Why not Synthesis yet?
Synthesizing 9 Commons into an Uncommon sounds like progress. Early on it usually delays the third hero. One extra hero multiplies clear speed, chest income, and XP far more than a slightly prettier white/blue item you will replace after one Portal farm.
Rule of thumb: Alchemy until 3 slots + basic automation feel online. Then synthesize spare duplicates, never your currently equipped best-in-slot guess without comparing rolls.
Hours 6–10 — first real trio and AFK loop
Universal party template
Because combat is automatic, almost every good team is:
Tank · Damage · Support
| Goal | Team | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Best free team | Knight + Sorcerer + Priest | Default end state of this roadmap |
| Early 2-slot bridge | Knight + Ranger (or Knight + Priest) | Temporary |
| Paid ceiling | Knight + Hunter + Priest | Boss push comfort |
Full comps: Best team guide.
AFK loop you want by hour 10
- Three heroes deployed.
- Auto-retry on.
- Auto-open chest runes started (often discussed as Far North / automation branch — names vary).
- Parked on a stage you crush (volume of chests > pride).
- Client left running minimised.
If the party wipes while you make coffee, lean gear toward Knight defense and Priest healing before chasing DPS fashion.
When you hit a wall
| Symptom | Fix |
|---|---|
| Stage won’t clear | Portal farm earlier stage for levels + gear, then return |
| Boss won’t die | Stack gear on the damage seat; bring Priest; consider Hunter if owned |
| Inventory full of trash | Alchemy after locking keepers |
| Gold but weak party | You skipped slots / second skill slot |
| “I played all night offline” | Offline has no chests — run the client |
Act bosses commonly need a Soul Stone. In widely shared guidance, the stone is consumed on success, not on failed attempts — so throwing yourself at the boss is practice, not a sink. Confirm on your patch tooltip.
First 10 hours checklist
- Installed; Auto-retry on; game left running for chests
- Claimed free Priest
- Opened Knight (or Ranger) and spent skill points every level
- Unlocked Rune Tree + Cube
- Alchemy melting junk; keepers locked before Auto Fill
- Bought 2nd and 3rd hero slots (Rune of Command)
- Running tank / damage / Priest (Knight + Sorcerer + Priest recommended)
- Started offline + auto-open automation nodes
- Know how to Portal farm when stuck
Mistakes that waste days
- Closing the game and calling it idle farming.
- Spreading gold across every rune branch before slots.
- Synthesizing equipped gear / early keepers.
- Never claiming Priest.
- Letting Auto Fill alchemize something you meant to keep.
- Headbutting one hard stage for hours instead of Portal farming.
- Buying Hunter/Slayer before understanding slots and Alchemy (DLC does not replace fundamentals).
- Socketing great materials into temporary Rare gear you will replace tonight.
FAQ
What hero should I start with?
Knight for safety, Ranger for speed. Claim Priest immediately either way.
Does the game progress offline?
Partly gold/XP with offline runes. No chests. Real loot needs the client open.
Should I craft or alchemize early?
Alchemize. Craft only to fill a missing slot you will actually wear.
How do I field more heroes?
Buy formation slots in the Rune Tree. Owning a class is not enough.
Is Task Bar Hero pay-to-win?
It is free to play; paid DLC adds heroes/convenience. Community consensus is that free teams clear content — Hunter mainly buys speed and comfort.
