Rune Tree Priority — Where Early Gold Should Go
Task Bar Hero Rune Tree guide: Rune of Command first, third-slot gold spike, automation vs combat nodes, and how runes interact with Cube Alchemy.
The Rune Tree is Task Bar Hero’s permanent progression spine. Gear rotates. Acts change. Runes stay. Early gold spent here compounds for the entire account.
Datamine-era community databases list on the order of ~197 rune nodes. You will not buy them evenly. This page is a priority framework, not a screenshot of every node (node names and costs move every few patches).

What runes buy
Expect branches covering:
- Party size (formation slots — Rune of Command path)
- Automation (auto-open chests, quality-of-life)
- Economy (gold/XP from kills, Alchemy bonuses, chest drop chance)
- Combat stats
- Inventory / stash
- Offline rewards
- Extra skill slots
Exact layout (south path, Far North, etc.) differs by patch UI. Rank by function, not by compass direction on an outdated screenshot.
The only question that matters
Before buying any node, ask:
Does this increase chests per hour, or survivable clear speed that leads to more chests?
If yes → buy.
If it only inflates a character sheet number while you still have one hero slot → wait.
Tier list for early spends
Tier S — structural unlocks (buy ASAP)
| Priority | Unlock | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2nd hero slot | Instant account multiplier |
| 2 | 3rd hero slot | Biggest early spike; often a large gold wall (~150k cited in multiple community guides — verify in-client) |
| 3 | 2nd active skill slot | Another huge combat multiplier once the party exists |
These are not “nice stats.” They change the rules of the game.
Tier A — make AFK real
- Auto-open for common / boss chests (without this, “idle” still needs you to click)
- Offline reward nodes (partial progress only — still no chests)
- Alchemy gold / Cube XP bonuses
Tier B — snowball income
- Chest drop chance
- Gold from enemy kills
- Hero XP gain
Buy after you can clear a comfortable farming stage on repeat.
Tier C — later polish
- Broad combat stat branches
- Inventory/stash when you are actually capped
- Niche specialization nodes
Suggested spend cadence by playtime
| Window | Gold destination |
|---|---|
| First gold income | Dump into Command until 2 slots |
| Next pile | Finish 3rd slot even if it feels expensive |
| Right after 3 slots | Second skill slot |
| Next | Enough automation to leave the taskbar alone 30–60 minutes |
| Then | Economy nodes tied to your farm stage |
| Finally | Combat stats for boss walls |

How runes interact with Cube and Market
- Alchemy gold is usually the fastest legal way to fund Command nodes. See Cube guide.
- Cube XP from Alchemy unlocks Decoration / Removal / etc. Melting trash is double progress.
- Steam Market sales can skip a painful gold spike, but you do not need Market to clear the game.
- Offline runes never replace live chest farming. See Idle vs Offline.
Common gold-waste patterns
| Waste | Why it hurts |
|---|---|
| +1 level in every branch | Delays third slot by hours |
| Combat stats before slots | One buffed hero still loses to three heroes |
| Ignoring auto-open | You become the chest bottleneck |
| Over-investing offline early | Offline has no chests; live runtime still rules |
| Buying inventory before you are full | Opportunity cost vs slots/automation |
Patch-proof rule
When a patch rebalances costs, re-rank with the same order:
slots → skill slots → automation → economy → combat
The tree UI can move. The decision order should not.
FAQ
What is the first rune I should buy?
Whatever unlocks your second hero slot, then the third. Everything else is secondary.
Is the third slot really worth ~150k gold?
If your client shows a large spike, yes — three heroes dominate two. Confirm the live cost; the priority is stable even when the number changes.
Should I buy offline runes?
Yes, after slots and basic automation. They are a consolation prize, not a strategy.
Combat runes or gold runes?
After structural unlocks: prefer nodes that increase clear speed or chest income on the stage you actually farm. Pure sheet stats on a wiping party are wasted gold.
What should I read next?
